But my words shall not pass away“
These words « Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. » (Math. 24 : 35), has been pronounced by somebody who wanted to give us the confirmation of who he is, and also the certainty, the assurance and the truthfulness of these words. These words are not like man’s words because no man can have this kind of authority to make this declaration, for every man knows that his knowledge and his words are fallible, there is no assurance in what he could say because he does not control the events and he does not know the future. He cannot control the future.
The one who had pronounced this kind of word with such authority must have control upon all things, not only for the things present but also for the future. If he has power over the present and future events, then he must also be capable to order them, if he has the capability to order them, he must be capable to create them and if he can create them he is God. By this we can understand that all is submissive to him and nothing can escape his control. The same who pronounced these words in Matthew is also the same that said : « I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last ». Rev. 1 : 11.
He knows the end of all things before their beginning. What is marvellous is to know that there is being that can reassure man, to give him what he has need of and who perfectly knows the true needs of all men, for he said of him « For thou hast possessed my reins : thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise thee. For I am fearfully and wonderfully made : marvellous are thy works ; and thatty my soul knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect ; and in thine book all my members were written which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. » Psalm 139: 13-16.
These words also gives us the prove that he knows man, and he also want his happiness. He also knows the difficulties and the weaknesses that can test a man ; and so his words are worthy to be trusted.
There was once a king who had a serious problem and he had a lot of people around him and he wanted these people to give him the explanation of what he had seen, but he had forgotten it. The bible declares it to us, as such : « And in the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, Nebuchadnezzar dreamed dreams, wherewith his spirit was troubled, and his sleep brake from him. Hen the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the soecerers, and the chaldeans, for the shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king. And the king said unto them, I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit was troubled to know the dream. Then spake the Chaldeans to the king in Syriack, O king, live for ever : tell thy servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation. The king answered and said to the Chaldeans, The thing is gone from me : if ye will not make known unto me the dream, with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be cut in pieces, and your houses shall be made a dunghill. But if ye shew the dream, and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receive of me gifts and reward and great honour : therefore shew me the dream, and the interpretation thereof. They answered again and said, Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will shew the interpretation of it. The king answered and said ; I know of certainty that ye would again the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me. But if ye will not make known unto me the dream, there is but one decree for you : for ye have prepared lying and corrupt words to speak before me, till the time be changed : therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that ye can shew me the interpretation thereof. The Chaldeans answered before the king, and said, There is not a man upon the earth that can shew the king’s matter : therefore there is no king, lord nor ruler, that ask such things at any magicioan, or astrologer, or Chaldean. And it is a rare thing that the king requireth, and there is non other that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with flesh. For this cause the king was angry and very furious, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon ». Dan. 2: 1-12.
